Custom Themes

The Trellis parent theme and child themes are built in a very specific way. Every decision with regards to sizing, spacing, layout and overall aesthetic is carefully crafted with consideration for SEO, pagespeed, accessibility, and user experience. All of this impacts the ability of your site to effectively monetize via ads.

What you get with Trellis is a professionally designed, off-the-shelf theme.

Customizing this creates a custom theme that no longer complies with our setup and that we’re unable to support.

Settings

Certain settings can be found in Admin > Appearance > Mediavine Trellis that can be used to configure your site. These are broadly built to be as compliant and safe to use as possible.

Any settings not found here, are customizations that create a Custom Theme.

Custom Theme

A custom theme is one that has been modified via the Customizer, Custom CSS, code snippets, child themes (that aren’t ours), or other file edits.

These are not our themes and we’re unable to offer support for custom themes.

This is because each developer and user performs changes in a different way, has a different setup, and has different goals. Very few customizations are done in a way that are compliant with:

  • pagespeed
  • accessibility
  • SEO
  • user experience
  • mobile-first
  • ad optimization

Customizations must be done by a professional with experience in all these areas, and can offer ongoing support for updates and changes in WordPress, Google and other third party services.

DIY customizations

If you don’t want to hire a developer to create your custom theme, there are thousands of online tutorials and courses online to learn HTML, CSS, PHP, WordPress and more.

Any type of code review or edits are outside the scope of support.

Ad revenue

Note that any customizations or custom themes can negatively impact ad revenues.
