Trellis Advanced Settings Overview

Everything you need to know about the Advanced settings in Trellis.

Various Advanced settings are available to help you set Trellis up the way you want it to function, and allow you to optimize performance. You can find these settings by logging into your WordPress site and navigating to Appearance → Mediavine Trellis → Advanced

This article will briefly explain each of these settings for easy reference.

Enable Critical CSS

(Default: Enabled)

You can learn all about Trellis Critical CSS, how it works, and how to troubleshoot it in this article.

If you notice any style rendering issues on the site, try adding the text string below to the end of the URL to identify any potential Critical CSS issues:

?mvt_flags=disable_critical_css

NOTE: Critical CSS is automatically bypassed for logged-in users. If you have Critical CSS enabled, you should also check the rendering of the site while logged out or in an incognito browser window.

Enable Stale CSS While Revalidating

(Default: Enabled)

NOTE: If you have a Plugin or stylesheet that is constantly running into errors with Trellis Critical CSS when that plugin is updated, then disabling this setting can help.

CSS Allowlist

This setting will include CSS styling for HTML elements that are rendered after page load. If you have elements from plugins or third-party scripts in the above-the-fold window, but their styles aren’t loading in properly, try adding the element’s selector to the CSS Allowlist. Check out this high-level overview of the critical CSS functionality here.

Force Critical CSS

If you notice that some below-the-fold elements on the page are un-styled, or styled incorrectly, you can try adding the selectors to this setting. This will force the selector into Critical CSS, even if it only exists below the fold.

Universal Analytics Tracking ID

Add your Universal Google Analytics tracking ID to this field.

Using this setting is the most efficient way to add your Google Analytics UA tag, so this is recommended. You are able to track both a UA tag in this field and a GA4 tag in the Google Analytics 4 Tracking ID field at the same time.

Be sure to remove your tag(s) from other plugins or inserted scripts to avoid duplicate tracking.

Google Analytics 4 Tracking ID

Add your Google Analytics 4 Tracking ID to this field.

Using this setting is the most efficient way to add your GA4 tag, so this is recommended. You are able to track both a GA4 tag in this field and a UA tag in the Universal Analytics Tracking ID field at the same time.

Be sure to remove the tag from other plugins or inserted scripts to avoid duplicate tracking.

Delay Google Analytics Load

(Default: Enabled)

Toggling this setting will delay the initial Google Analytics tag load for 3 seconds. Visitors who leave your site within that time will not be tracked, but site speed will be improved – specifically initial page load time.

If Google Analytics is showing up as a render-blocking or unused JavaScript resource in Pagespeed Insights reports, enabling this setting will help.

Trellis SEO Output

(Default: Disabled)

This setting will enable meta descriptions, schema output (via JSON-LD), and Open Graph tags for your site.

Trellis disables this option entirely if it detects Yoast, RankMath, or AIO as installed and active. For safety, it cannot be turned on while these plugs are active. For all other SEO Plug-ins, disable this to prevent outputting duplicate SEO data.

JavaScript Exclusions

If there are scripts on the site that you would like to be excluded from Trellis optimizations like deferment or minification, you can enter full or partial URLs here.
